DTC    P0016    Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)

for Preparation Click here

DESCRIPTION

In the VVT system, the appropriate intake valve open and close timing is controlled by the ECM. The ECM performs intake valve control by performing the following: 1) controlling the camshaft and camshaft timing oil control valve, and operating the camshaft timing gear; and 2) changing the relative positions of the gaps between the camshaft and crankshaft.

DTC No.
Detection Condition
Trouble Area
P0016
Deviation in crankshaft position sensor signal and camshaft position sensor signal
(2-trip detection logic)
  1. Mechanical system (Timing chain has jumped tooth or chain stretched)
  2. Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve (OCV)
  3. OCV filter
  4. Camshaft timing sprocket assembly
  5. ECM

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT:
Read freeze frame data using an intelligent tester. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

1.CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0016 AND P0017)
  1. Connect an intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  1. Turn the tester on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

  1. Read DTCs.

    HINT:
If any DTCs other than P0016 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

2.PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (OPERATE OCV)
  1. Connect an intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Start the engine.

  1. Turn the tester on.

  1. Warm up the engine.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1).

  1. Enter the following menus: VVT Change Angle (Bank1) and VVT OCV Duty (Bank1).

  1. Check that the VVT Change Angle (Bank1) varies when operating the OCV using the tester.

    OK:
The VVT Change Angle (Bank1) value and engine speed vary.

HINT:
If the VVT system can be operated through the Active Test, it can be assumed that the VVT system is operating normally.

  1. Apply battery voltage to terminals of the OCV. Check the valve operation.

    OK:
    Valve moves quickly.

  1. Reinstall the OCV.

5.INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER

    A200834
  1. Remove the OCV filter.

  1. Check that the OCV filter is not clogged.

    OK:
    Filter is not clogged.

  1. Reinstall the OCV filter.

NG
CLEAN OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER
OK

6.REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING SPROCKET ASSEMBLY
  1. Replace the camshaft timing sprocket assembly (Click here).

7.CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS
  1. Clear the DTC using the intelligent tester.

  1. Start the engine and warm it up.

  1. Drive the vehicle for 20 minutes or more.

  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC / Pending.

  1. Read DTCs.

    OK:
    No DTC output.
